In December 2021, as the new round of COVID-19 pandemic hit, the School of Architecture of Chang 'an University continued to promote international educational exchanges and cooperation in strict compliance with relevant epidemic prevention requirements, and further stimulated students' vitality, upward motivation and enthusiasm for learning online.
On December 15th at 8:00 PM, the School of Architecture invited Mr. Douglas King, The Vice President of Chicago-based Project Management Consultants, fellow of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), member of the American College of Healthcare Architects, winner of the 10th NATIONAL Medical Hcd Award in the United States in 2021, to gave an online lecture titled Developing Contemporary Emergency Response Facilities. The presentation was presided over by Professor Yu Kanhua, vice dean of the School of Architecture. Teachers such as Zhang Lei and Wang Shaorui, as well as nearly 200 teachers and students of the School of Architecture attended the presentation.

This presentation started with The McCormick Placement Alternative Care Facility (Chicago 2020). Mr. Douglas King elaborated on a series of issues from the design engineer, the construction team, the management funding agency, and the project's own needs to the thinking and design of how to create an alternative care facility. And the medical building design project internal functional partition (not acute space and acute space), detail design (prep nurse station and the bathroom, modular support space, medical isolation, etc.) and infrastructure (super quiet fan, filter unit, portable shower and toilet, etc.) , and the various design by means of science and technology were introduced.
During the presentation, Mr. Douglas King and Ms. Minerva Jang, a Master of Architecture candidate at The Rochester Institute of Technology, also outlined their team's 2021 project of converting a high school into a modern emergency facility, drawing on the experience of the Temporary Ark Hospital in Wuhan, China, and the Stony Brook Campus of the State University of New York. In the design of the typical environmental study, the traffic flow analysis and floor plan design of the case were carried out according to the map of the American school district and the three implementation stages of the initial response, recovery and prevention of the pandemic.
Mr. Douglas King summarized the successful experience in the medical rehabilitation of this emergency facility, which was to fully understand the stages of an emergency and prepare for a series of emergencies while taking into account the duration of the emergency operation, Independent internal and external logistics are fully considered in the design with a view to providing equitable access to emergency care and infrastructure for all, and local building materials are recommended.
